  • Updated
  • 0

The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, has become one of the year's busiest shopping days.聽 But few people know the true meaning behind why it is called "Black Friday."聽 Many say the term comes from the concept that businesses operate 鈥渋n the red鈥 until the day after Thanksgiving.聽 And that the massive sales finally allow them to make a profit and put them 鈥渋n the black.鈥 However, this is false.聽 The most accurate explanation of the term dates back to the early 1960s and police officers in Philadelphia.聽 Officers used the phrase 鈥淏lack Friday鈥 to describe the chaos caused by people beginning their holiday shopping.聽 The phrase 鈥淏lack Friday鈥 didn鈥檛 become known nationwide until the late 1980s.
